Haig Point Lighthouse

10 Haig Point Circle
Hilton Head Island, SC 29928
800.686.3441

In 1872, construction commenced on the Lighthouse that would guide captains navigating the shifting shoals of Calibogue Sound. The Lighthouse's 40-foot tower served mariners traveling around the northern tip of Daufuskie between 1873 to the 1930s. After many years passed with no attention to the structure, the Lighthouse was restored in the 1980s after development began at Haig Point.

As the legend goes, a young maiden named Maggie lived in the Lighthouse with her family in the late 19th century. Her father, Patrick Comer, was the first lighthouse keeper, along with his wife, Bridget. The family moved to Daufuskie in 1873 and tended to the structure for the first 18 years. Maggie fell in love with a naval engineer who was tasked with refitting the Lighthouse's lantern room. Notes from his diary revealed that the pair had quickly fallen in love, but something happened unexpectedly and the couple split. He left and never returned to Daufuskie Island, leaving her with a broken heart. Haig Point residents and visitors have claimed they felt the friendly presence of Maggie.

While it serves as a guesthouse with two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound, the Lighthouse is also a sought-after venue for weddings, special events and private parties. Be sure to tour the historic lighthouse on your visit to Haig Point!

Daufuskie Island Rum Company

270 Haig Point Rd
Daufuskie Island, SC 29915
843.342.4786

The journey began in June of 2013, and what a journey it has been. The concept of a rum distillery on Daufuskie seemed to be a great one. After all, rum is an island drink and it is made on islands all throughout the Caribbean. So, why not on Daufuskie Island? The first obstacle was finding the right place to put the distillery...Set in a private oasis replete with two large live oaks with plenty of Spanish moss and a fantastic pond for the distillery to overlook, we found our future.

The day came when the beautiful stills and fermenters arrived! They were created just for the Daufuskie Island Rum Company and built in Alabama. The stills are beautiful copper belly column stills and the fermenters are made of cyprus that was grown in Louisiana. We fill each fermenter with 600 pounds of Demerara sugar, 5 pounds of yeast and hot water from our well. This begins the undertaking of turning premium raw ingredients into handcrafted rum. Careful attention is given to each step of the process.

Visitors from all over the world find us, and the growth of our product continuing, our 100% American made Rum is distilled, bottled and packed by hand here on Daufuskie Island. The sun, sea and rich history all blend together to make this island the perfect place for the Daufuskie Island Rum Company and an unforgettable Lowcountry treasure. We hope to see you at the distillery soon. Open Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00am to 5:00pm.

Silver Dew Winery

146 Beach Dr
Daufuskie Island, SC 29915
843.684.4445

Originally constructed in 1883 to store oil for the lighthouse lamps, the brick wick house was converted into a winery in the mid-1900s by Pappy Burn, who made a name for himself with his scuppernong wine.

As Lancy Burn tells it, his granddad's winemaking made him a magnet on Daufuskie Island. Papy Burn worked at the Daufuskie's Bloody Point Lighthouse for many years. And in the mid-1900s, Papy converted an old building used to store oil, wicks and lamps for the lighthouse into a winery.

The tiny and historic Silver Dew Winery was the first registered winery in the state, according to locals. Author Pat Conroy even took notice, writing about it in his Lowcountry-based 1972 novel, "The Water is Wide."

FirstUnion African Baptist Church

Daufuskie Island, SC 29915

The development of First Union African Baptist Church, now listed as an historical landmark, began in 1879 when John I. Stoddard divided the Mary Field plantation into lots and sold 12 acres to former slaves for the purpose of building a church and developing a cemetery. The land was purchased in 1881 for $82 and the first church was built. The original church building burned in 1884 and was subsequently rebuilt.

From the early 1900's through the 1930's the church building supported worship service as well as a schoolhouse for the island's children. From 1916 to the 1920's Reverend Richard Thomas, a visiting preacher from Savannah, would come once a month to serve communion at the church and at the same time administer a spelling bee for the school children.
